Mark Hurd goes from king of H-P to samurai for Oracle

As he begins a new job at Oracle Corp., Mark Hurd will join a technology giant known for fierce competition, and for typically not letting scandals, including those sexual in nature, distract it from trying to beat up on rivals.

Oracle should be perfect fit for the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive whose meteoric rise to fame as a manager with a laser focus on efficiency and cost-cutting was cut short by a scandal involving allegations of sexual harassment and improper conduct, analysts said.

But it may also be an odd role for Hurd, who will move from being H-P’s leader to being a sidekick of one of Silicon Valley’s most flamboyantly controversial leaders — an executive who is often portrayed, given his fascination with Japanese culture, as the shogun of the software business.
